PROGRAM
TO SUPPORT AND SIMULATE STUDENT'S EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES AND
EXPERIENCES
The Florida Space Grant Consortium (FSGC) entered into a
cooperative agreement with NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC)
to manage four programs, 1) Summer High School Apprenticeship
Research Program (SHARP), 2) Summer Aids, 3) Florida State
Science and Engineering Fair Winners, and 4) Stay-in-School.
In conjunction with KSC, the FSGC will
be responsible for recruiting students for all the programs,
except the SHARP program. FSGC will contact schools and other
organizations, receive applications, screen applicants and
interview students.A pool of candidates will be provided to
KSC for final selection. KSC will place the students at the
Center. FSGC has hired a local teacher in the KSC area to
work as a local contact for KSC and for the students.
The Center for Precollegiate Education
and Training (CPET) at the University of Florida (UF) will
provide students in all programs with the opportunity to travel
to Gainesville (at no cost to the students) for one day of
activities and laboratory experiences with FSGC science and
engineering faculty. If necessary, UF will also provide the
two winners of the Science and Engineering Fair with up to
$1,000 each in travel funds, to cover expenses while in the
KSC area.
Programs
1. Summer High School Apprenticeship Research Program
(SHARP)
The Summer High School Apprenticeship Research Program (SHARP)
is designed to encourage a diverse population of academically
gifted students to explore professions related to science,
mathematics, and engineering. The students will have the opportunity
to work directly under a technical specialist in a field which
interests them and participate in a variety of activities
during the eight-week summer program. SHARP is open to students
who will be juniors or seniors in the fall. Traditionally
students are attending school in Brevard, Orange, Seminole,
Volusia, or Osceola Counties.
2. Summer Aid
Students in this program will participate in activities at
KSC full time during the summer months. They should be at
least 16 years old and U.S. citizens; there is no skill qualification.
An attempt is made to place each participant with a mentor
who will help them develop his or her skills.
3. Florida State Science and Engineering Fair
The two winners of the Fair will receive a NASA Summer Award
and participate in activities at KSC to gain valuable experience
and knowledge in the aerospace field. Eligible students must
have a 3.0 GPA, be a U.S. citizen, and be accepted to a college
or university and have a technical career in mind.
4. Stay-in-School
The Stay-in-School Program is designed to support students
who are working toward a high school diploma, high school
equivalency certificate or college degree. They work full
time during the summer months and school vacations, and part
time during school.
