Pre-workshop Information

We look forward to meeting all of you on November 7th!

First, a little about the conference participants.  We have eighty non-NASA folks from twenty-four states.  We are pleased about the diversity of the participants - science centers, planetariums, nature museums, Challenger Learning Centers to name a few.

Citizenship.  In reviewing the applications, I did not see anyone who is a non-U.S. citizen.  A couple of folks did not indicate their citizenship.  If you are NOT a U.S. citizen and are attending this workshop, you must let us know that immediately.  Please email or call me right away.

Dress and photography.  The attire for this conference is business casual.  For the tours each day, you must wear long pants (no dresses/skirts), closed-toed shoes (no sandals and low-heeled), and a sleeved shirt (no tank tops).  Photography on the tours is allowed, but NO flash photography inside the operational areas -- use a fast ASA.

If anyone has a disability or mobility issue we need to be aware of, please let us know.  We will be moving around at this workshop.  Also, if you have any required special meal needs let us know.

Again, the first time we will see you is at the KSC Visitor's Complex at 6:00 pm Sunday night November 7th.  Just to reiterate directions:  For this first event, a reception the evening of Sunday, November 7, you MUST be at the KSC Visitor's Complex by 6:00 pm to board the buses which will take us to the event.  The event is being held at the Apollo Saturn Visitor’s Complex, within KSC’s secured gates.  You cannot drive there.  To get to the Visitor's Complex, From the Cocoa Beach area, proceed to the KSC Visitors Complex going north on State Road A1A merge onto the "Beeline" expressway (528) going west, turn north on State Road 3 and follow the signs to the complex.  Driving time is about 40 minutes.  Park in the main parking area, and walk up to the ticket booths.  We will have a table there for check in.  These instructions are also valid for arrival on Monday morning of the workshop.

I have communicated with most of you about the stipend to support your attendance at the conference.  In general the stipend is $500 per person up to three people for a team and will be mailed to the lead institution shortly after the event.

As you know there may be a launch while you are here and we will of course monitor that situation and take advantage of it should that occur.

Finally, to review the goals for the conference.  We hope to accomplish three main goals at this conference:

      • Provide informal educators knowledge and understanding needed to inform people about NASA’s Return to Flight effort and space exploration activity
      • Provide informal educators access to senior NASA personnel and key engineers for brainstorming and collaboration needed to lead and implement a space-themed exhibit utilizing materials and resources covered in the workshop
      • Develop and maintain new relationships between the informal education community and NASA

We look forward to your visit!

Pamela M. Biegert
KSC Education Director
